There are just about two things which most of us (software professionals) are bothered about!

“Come on man there really aren’t many(any?) Projects!”

“I’m at bench ... hmm.. sorry rather I can say we are at bench!” or it would be

“Oops ... I don’t have time man.. 24 hours really isn’t enough!!”

“Come on man ... am not finding time even for my routine ...”

I was thinking about this phenomenon for a long time and found a good analogy (at least I thought so! Ha ha ). Here we go .. .. ..

Software Soldiers

Battles - days and nights would mean one and the same. There would be one mission, and one goal, one target, strategies to be followed and implemented. They would hardly find time to relax or to sleep. They and would be expected to be alert and in the best of their mindsets while facing the enemy. I compare this phase of a solider with a software professional on a live project. Well you are actually doing your job. It does not really matter if you find time to do your routine or not, you have to do justice to your profession!. We need to be prepared and alert, when we are on projects, our mission would be to add value to the company, our target would be to complete the project, showcasing the best of our quality, and our strategies would be the project plans.

If he(soldier) is good enough, survives the battle, and if peace had been announced, he is left without any thing to do (meaning unless and until we are on the worst case, there wouldn’t be battles which run across for years together). I would like to compare this phase of a soldier with that of a software professional, without a project (most popularly known as “The bench” / “Knowledge Ramp-up”). The soldiers would not be left idle, and would be given training sessions, taught additional skills, would be allowed to practice skills they had mastered already or would be given expert advice on special areas of importance. Isn’t it this way?.

I would love to say “I’m at bench” for it the time wherein I can find time to sharpen and hone my skills, to review my personal capabilities, to learn new skills, to practice skills I had learnt, present myself to be reviewed, and get declared am fit, for the real battle (the projects). Of course ones immediate thought on this statement would be that a software professional would learn skills practice and get validated during his training period and he should be put into projects immediately after his completion of training. Well actually that is not the case. I do agree that we learn a lot of skills during our training. But one has to understand and appreciate that internal project and assignments are the exact place where in you get to practice and appreciate what so ever you learn in your training sessions.

Getting one step further, training sessions for a soldier could be further classified into general training and skill based training, which is akin to the on boarding training and the specific skills training. Every soldier who is selected for the army is not immediately put into projects (means war to them), neither can he demand that. He will have to wait patiently for months, and they wouldn’t be really sure if they would get to see a battle! We are lucky in a way that we don’t have to wait that way, for its sure that we would be put into projects very soon.

I would like to conclude with a positive note to say that, as professionals “At bench” we should strive hard to hone our personal skills and prepare ourselves to face the battle with the best of our mindset, and the best possible self confidence, and best possible interpersonal skills.
